To melkearbeidere i California ble smittet med fugleinfluensa, det 15. og 16. menneskelige tilfellet oppdaget i år i et pågående utbrudd som påvirker landets melkekyr, sa helsemyndigheter torsdag.
De siste tilfellene ble funnet hos arbeidere som hadde kontakt med infiserte storfe i Californias Central Valley, hvor mer enn 50 besetninger har vært berørt siden august.
Arbeiderne utviklet rødhet i øynene kjent som konjunktivitt og hadde milde symptomer.
California helsemyndigheter sa at arbeiderne var ansatt på forskjellige gårder og det er ingen kjent sammenheng mellom de to tilfellene, noe som tyder på at de ble smittet gjennom dyrekontakt, ikke av mennesker.
De amerikanske sentrene for sykdomskontroll og forebygging bekreftet torsdag de positive testresultatene, de første for California.
CDC-tjenestemenn sa at nye tilfeller av fugleinfluensa hos mennesker utsatt for infiserte dyr er «ikke uventet.»
Risikoen for publikum er fortsatt lav, la de til.
Over hele USA har mer enn 250 melkebesetninger blitt smittet i 14 stater siden utbruddet av H5N1 fugleinfluensa ble bekreftet i mars.
Fugleinfluensa har spredt seg i ville og tamme fugler i USA i flere år, men ble nylig funnet hos melkekyr.
Før dette året ble ett tilfelle av fugleinfluensa oppdaget hos en person, en fjærfearbeider i Colorado som ble syk i 2022.
De fleste tilfeller i år har blitt oppdaget hos arbeidere som hadde kontakt med storfe eller fjørfe i Colorado, Michigan og Texas.
En person i Missouri ble også smittet, men denne personen hadde ingen kjent kontakt med dyr, og kilden til denne sykdommen er ikke fastslått.
