Husets speaker Mike Johnson beskyldte tildelingen av personell i stedet for mangel på penger som hovedskyldige bak sikkerhetssvikt som førte til to forsøk på attentat mot tidligere president Donald Trump.
«President Trump trenger mest dekning av noen. Han er den mest angrepne, han er den mest truede – til og med sannsynligvis mer enn da han var i det ovale kontoret, sa Johnson (R-La.) til «Fox and Friends» mandag morgen.
«Vi krever i huset at han har alle eiendeler tilgjengelig, og vi vil gjøre mer tilgjengelig om nødvendig,» la 52-åringen til. «Jeg tror ikke det er et finansieringsspørsmål. Jeg tror det er en arbeidskraftsfordeling [issue].»
Johnson og hans kone møtte den republikanske nominerte øyeblikk etter at tjenestemenn sa at en Secret Service-tjenestemann konfronterte den potensielle leiemorder Ryan Wesley Routh nær det sjette hullet på Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach søndag ettermiddag.
Etter sikkerhetsskremselen sa Sheriff Ric Bradshaw i Palm Beach County til journalister at hvis Trump var den sittende presidenten, «ville vi hatt hele den høyere golfbanen omringet» og understreket at «fordi han ikke er det, er sikkerheten begrenset til områdene som hemmeligheten Tjenesten anser som mulig.»
Bradshaws kommentarer fremkalte dype bekymringer fra lovgivere på begge sider av midtgangen og oppfordrer til å utvide den 45. presidentens sikkerhetsordning.
«Jeg sender et brev til Secret Service og krever at president Trump får samme beskyttelse som president Biden. Han har hatt to mislykkede attentatforsøk de siste to månedene. Dette er fullstendig uakseptabelt,» skrev senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) X mandag morgen.
Routh klarte å komme seg mellom 300 og 500 yards av Trumps plassering på banen med en AK-47-stil rifle og et sikte, som han forlot etter å ha blitt skutt på av Trumps forhåndsagent, ifølge Bradshaw.
«På golfbanen er det mye areal å dekke. Etter hva jeg forstår, etter hva president Trump forstår, var de foran ham to hull. Det ble brukt droner, forklarte Johnson.
«Det var ikke tilfelle i Butler, Pennsylvania. Det er åpenbart at noen forbedringer blir gjort,» la foredragsholderen til, med henvisning til et forsøk på Trumps liv 13. juli av Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, under et valgkampmøte.
Johnson berømmet beskyttelsesbyråets menige som «virkelig patriotiske, flotte mennesker», men forklarte at han hadde dype bekymringer for byråets ledelse ved Department of Homeland Security.
«Det er ledelsen. Vi har ingen tro – jeg har ingen tro på sekretær [Alejandro] Mayorkas i Department of Homeland Security,» sa han.
Ifølge USASpending.gov har Secret Service et budsjett på 3,81 milliarder dollar for regnskapsåret 2024, som avsluttes 30. september. Av dette beløpet er det store flertallet – 3,37 milliarder dollar – satt av til «operasjoner og støtte». Imidlertid har bare 2,42 milliarder dollar av denne operasjonsfinansieringen blitt brukt.
«To attentatforsøk på 60 dager på en tidligere president og den republikanske kandidaten er uakseptabelt,» skrev rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) på X søndag kveld.
«The Secret Service må komme til kongressen i morgen, fortelle oss hvilke ressurser som trengs for å utvide den beskyttende omkretsen, og la den fordele den i en topartistemme samme dag.»
Teknisk sett var nedre kammer ute av sesjon på mandag, selv om senatet hadde planlagt virksomhet.
Det pågår nå flere etterforskninger av sikkerhetsskremselen på søndag, inkludert av FBI, Secret Service, delstaten Florida og mer.
Trump har kritisert retorikk fra president Biden og visepresident Kamala Harris for å motivere den påståtte mistenkte.
«Han trodde på retorikken til Biden og Harris, og han handlet på den,» reflekterte Trump til Fox News. «Deres retorikk gjør at jeg blir skutt på, når det er jeg som skal redde landet, og det er de som ødelegger landet – både fra innsiden og utsiden.»
