Turbulens har blitt hyppigere. Det er en trend American Airlines-kaptein Dennis Tajer har opplevd på egen hånd.
Av hensyn til passasjerenes sikkerhet sa Tajer, en pilot i over 30 år, at det er viktig at de bruker bilbelte til enhver tid mens de sitter, selv om det ikke er lovpålagt.
Det er for deres beskyttelse, og sikkerheten til de rundt dem, sa Tajer til FOX Business.
I følge en studie fra 2023 av forskere ved University of Reading i Storbritannia, har turbulens i klar luft økt i regioner rundt om i verden.
Over Nord-Atlanteren, som er en av de travleste flyrutene, økte den totale årlige varigheten av alvorlig turbulens med 55 % mellom 1979 og 2020.
Moderat turbulens økte med 37 %, og lett turbulens økte med 17 %. Alle de nevnte økningene var i samsvar med effekten av klimaendringer, ifølge studien, som ble publisert i Geophysical Research Letters.
«Etter et tiår med forskning som viser at klimaendringer vil øke klarluftsturbulens i fremtiden, har vi nå bevis som tyder på at økningen allerede har begynt,» professor Paul Williams, en atmosfærisk forsker ved University of Reading som var medforfatter av studere.
Til tross for endringene i turbulens gjennom årene, tror ikke Tajer at gjeldende sikkerhetsbeltebestemmelser satt av Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) nødvendigvis trenger å endres.
I henhold til FAA-bestemmelsene er passasjerer pålagt å ha sikkerhetsbeltene ordentlig festet under taksing, start og landing.
Selv om regelverket ikke definerer begrepet «forsvarlig sikret», er passasjerer pålagt å følge besetningsmedlemmers instruksjoner angående bruk av sikkerhetsbelter.
FAA fortalte FOX Business at regelverket også krever at besetningsmedlemmer varsler passasjerene når og under hvilke forhold de trenger å feste sikkerhetsbeltet.
Passasjerer må følge kabinansattes instruksjoner om hvordan de skal bære beltene, ifølge FAA.
Airlines for America, en handelsgruppe som representerer store amerikanske passasjerselskaper, fortalte FOX Business at alle medlemmene «oppmuntrer til bruk av sikkerhetsbelter mens de sitter av sikkerhetsgrunner, inkludert turbulens.»
I alle tilfeller når turbulens er varslet eller oppdaget, vil passasjerskipene minne passasjerene på å bli sittende og feste sikkerhetsbeltene. Bilbelteskiltene vil vanligvis være aktivert, sa faggruppen.
Det er imidlertid ingen lov som krever at sikkerhetsbelter kreves for hele flyturen.
For det første er det ikke mulig fordi folk må stå opp og bruke badet, sa Tajer. Han sa også at hvis bilbelteskiltet var på hele tiden, ville det redusere betydningen når det faktisk er alvorlig turbulens.
«Det vi har lært er at ved å la bilbelteskiltet være på, når det egentlig ikke er nødvendig, og det er jevn luft, normaliserer du å ignorere bilbelteskiltet,» sa Tajer og la til at «bare å ha det på hele tiden gjør det ikke unikt og folk blir vant til det, og så begynner de å bare ignorere det.»
Men når folk sitter i setet, sier Tajer at de skal bruke sikkerhetsbeltet, uavhengig av hva skiltet sier.
Svaret er ikke «å ha en lov som sier at du må ha på sikkerhetsbeltet når du sitter … svaret er videreutdanning,» fortsatte Tajer.
«Så grunnleggende som det er, er den høyeste formen for teknologi som kan hindre deg fra å bli skadet å ha på sikkerhetsbeltet,» sa Tajer og la til at «alvorlig turbulens skjer oftere i vår anekdotiske opplevelse, og det er vanligvis en advarsel, men noen ganger det er ikke.»
FAA sa at det jobber for å varsle flybesetninger om turbulens «ved hjelp av teknologi og oppmuntre og videreformidle pilotrapporter om turbulens.»
I tillegg, gjennom en kontrakt med National Center for Atmospheric Sciences, sa FAA at det utviklet en turbulens «nowcast» som gir raskt oppdaterte, 15-minutters turbulensprognoser slik at piloter og flyselskaper kan ta taktiske beslutninger om hvordan de skal unngå det.
