Sjefen for Ugandas militære truer med å utvise den øverste amerikanske diplomaten som er tildelt den sentralafrikanske nasjonen etter et diplomatisk sprut.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba har gitt USAs ambassadør William Popp et ultimatum – be om unnskyldning innen mandag morgen eller forlat landet, ifølge rapporter.
Militærlederen har ikke sagt nøyaktig hvilken lovbrudd ambassadør Popp begikk, og ambassadekilder sier til lokale utsalgssteder at dette utbruddet har overrasket dem totalt.
General Kainerugaba – sønnen til Ugandas president Yoweri Museveni – kom med kravet tidligere denne uken på X og fulgte opp med en mengde tweets som doblet ned på anklagene om at Popp «undergravet» den ugandiske regjeringen, selv om ingen av Popps handlinger ble beskrevet.
«Ugandere,» skrev generalen siden slettede tweets ifølge The East African. «Det er min høytidelige plikt å kunngjøre for dere alle at vi som nasjon er i ferd med å ha en alvorlig konfrontasjon med den nåværende amerikanske ambassadøren til landet vårt. For å ha ikke respektert vår elskede og feirede president og undergravet Ugandas grunnlov.»
Kainerugaba fortsatte: «Hvis den nåværende amerikanske ambassadøren ikke ber Mzee om unnskyldning [sic] personlig innen mandag morgen (09:00) for hans udiplomatiske oppførsel i landet vårt, vil vi kreve at han forlater Uganda.»
Presidenten la til at han «ikke har noe problem med USA», men la til «i det siste har vi mange bevis på at de har jobbet mot NRM-regjeringen.»
Det er uklart hva slags aktivitet som påstås mot ambassadør Popp eller om de to mennene hadde en tvist av personlig karakter.
En ambassadekilde fortalte til The East African at de ble tatt uvitende og «prøver å analysere situasjonen».
«Våre nesten 1 milliard dollar støtter lokale institusjoner og organisasjoner hver dag for å forbedre helseutdanningen og velstanden til millioner av ugandiere,» het det i en uttalelse fra ambassaden som ble gitt til det utsalgsstedet. «Ambassaden, ambassadøren og USAs regjering fortsetter å jobbe direkte og normalt hver dag med ugandiske myndigheter om et bredt spekter av saker.»
Sewayana Livingstone, direktør for NGO Foundation for Human Rights Initiative Uganda, sa at Kainerugaba må holde seg i veien.
«Han trenger å roe seg,» sa Livingstone til VOA News, «han må forstå at Uganda jeg snørrer ham, det er han heller ikke Uganda. Jeg tror ugandierne må ringe ham til orden. Det er på høy tid.»
Selv om den firestjerners generalen tilsynelatende slettet noen av de kontroversielle X-innleggene, har han også fortsatt å legge ut nyhetsartikler som beskriver den nåværende tvisten.
Kainerugaba har en veldig aktiv tilstedeværelse på sosiale medier. Han har over 10 000 innlegg og nesten én million følgere på X.
Hjemme har Kainerugaba møtt kritikk for denne overaktive tilstedeværelsen på internett – men har forsvart seg på X som skriver: «Hvis jeg ikke kommenterer sosiopolitiske og økonomiske spørsmål, gjør jeg ikke jobben min,» og la til, » det er helt profesjonelt for meg å legge ut hele tiden.»
Den amerikanske ambassaden i Uganda svarte ikke på en forespørsel om kommentar på tidspunktet for publisering og har ikke gitt noen offentlige uttalelser om spyttet på noen sosial plattform.
