Det hvite hus har presset Kiev på sine «mål» etter at russiske tjenestemenn hevdet at rundt «1000» ukrainske soldater har startet et stort grenseoverskridende angrep som har gått inn i sin tredje dag, sa amerikanske tjenestemenn.
Pressesekretær i Det hvite hus Karine Jean-Pierre sa at USA undersøkte rapportene om det overraskende ukrainske motangrepet i Russlands Kursk-region og nådde ut til sine allierte i Kiev «for å lære mer om deres mål».
«Vi kommer til å nå ut til dem for å se hva deres mål er og fortsette å holde fokus,» sa Jean-Pierre onsdag. «Vi kommer til å fortsette å fokusere på å sikre at de har det de trenger for å forsvare seg mot Russlands aggresjon.»
Ukrainske styrker har så langt avansert så mye som seks mil inn i det vestlige Russland, ifølge Institute for the Study of War, en Washington-basert tenketank.
Den overraskende inntrengningen fikk Russlands president Vladimir Putin til å kjempe for å svare på onsdag, og Moskva-tjenestemenn hevdet at Kievs hær ikke har gjort betydelige fremskritt.
«Fienden har ikke avansert en eneste meter, tvert imot, den trekker seg tilbake,» sa Kursks viseguvernør Andrei Belosotsky til statlige medier torsdag.
«Forsøk fra individuelle enheter på å bryte gjennom dypt inn i territoriet i Kursk-retningen blir undertrykt,» la det russiske forsvarsdepartementet til.
Russlands påstander om grenseoverskridende angrep, dets antall og fremskritt kunne ikke bekreftes uavhengig.
Ukraina har forblitt mamma på målet med operasjonen, med tidligere rapporter som indikerer at Kievs styrker kom så langt som åtte mil over grensen for å ta russiske bosetninger i Sudzha, hjem til en viktig rørledning som leverer gass til resten av Europa.
Myhailo Podolyak, en topprådgiver for Ukrainas president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, sa torsdag at grenseangrepene kan «skremme» Russland til å revurdere sine fremtidige handlinger i krigen.
«Når vil det være mulig å gjennomføre en forhandlingsprosess på den måten at vi kan presse dem eller få noe fra dem? Bare når krigen ikke pågår i henhold til scenariene deres, sa Podolyak.
Inngrepet vil være første gang det ukrainske militæret har blitt utplassert i så betydelige antall på russisk jord.
Analytikere mener at Kyivs mål i angrepet kan være å trekke russiske reserver til dette området, noe som potensielt kan svekke Kremls angrep i Ukrainas Donetsk-region, hvor Moskva har oppnådd betydelige gevinster.
Trikset kan virke ettersom Putin har oppfordret sitt kabinett til å koordinere bistanden til Kursk-regionen, som ligger rundt 320 mil fra Moskva.
Putin kalte angrepet som en «storskala provokasjon» og hevdet at det innebar «vilkårlig beskytning av sivile bygninger, bolighus, ambulanser med forskjellige typer våpen».
