Postvesenets nye leveringsbiler kommer ikke til å vinne en skjønnhetskonkurranse.
De er høye og klønete. Frontrutene er store. Hettene deres ligner en andebb. Støtfangerne deres er enorme.
«Du kan se at (designerne) ikke hadde utseende i tankene,» sa postarbeider Avis Stonum.
Bortsett fra merkelig utseende, får den første håndfull neste generasjons leveringsbiler som rullet inn på postrutene i august i Athen strålende anmeldelser fra brevbærere som er vant til grusomme eldre kjøretøyer som mangler moderne sikkerhetsfunksjoner og som er utsatt for å gå i stykker – og til og med ta fyr.
I løpet av noen få år etter den første utrullingen, vil flåten ha utvidet seg til 60 000, de fleste av dem elektriske modeller, og fungerer som posttjenestens primære varebil fra Maine til Hawaii.
Når de er fullt utplassert, vil de representere et av de mest synlige tegnene på byråets 10-årige transformasjon på 40 milliarder dollar ledet av postmestergeneral Louis DeJoy, som også pusser opp aldrende fasiliteter, overhaler prosess- og transportnettverket og setter i gang andre endringer.
De nåværende postkjøretøyene – Grumman Long Life Vehicle, som dateres til 1987 – har gjort godt på navnet sitt, og overgått den anslåtte 25-årige levetiden. Men de er godt forfalt for utskifting.
Grummans er bråkete og lite drivstoffeffektive (9 mpg), og er kostbare å vedlikeholde.
De er brennhete om sommeren, med bare en gammeldags elektrisk vifte for å sirkulere luft.
De har speil montert på dem som når de er perfekt justert lar føreren se rundt kjøretøyet, men speilene blir stadig slått ut av justering. Alarmerende nok tok nesten 100 av kjøretøyene fyr i fjor, og satte både transportører og post i fare.
De nye lastebilene bygges med komfort, sikkerhet og nytte i tankene, av Oshkosh Defence i South Carolina.
Selv høye postbærere kan reise seg uten å knekke med hodet og gå forfra og bak for å hente pakker.
For sikkerhets skyld har de kollisjonsputer, 360-graders kamera, blindsoneovervåking, kollisjonssensorer og blokkeringsfrie bremser — alt dette mangler på Grummans.
De nye lastebilene har også en funksjon som ble vanlig i de fleste biler for mer enn seks tiår siden – klimaanlegg.
Og det er nøkkelen for sjåfører i Deep South, ørkenen sørvest og andre områder med brennhete somre.
«Jeg lover deg, det føltes som himmelen blåste i ansiktet mitt,» sa Stonum om sin første erfaring med å jobbe i en luftkondisjonert lastebil.
Richard Burton, en annen sjåfør, sa at han setter pris på det større nyttelastområdet, som kan romme større pakker, og det faktum at han kan stå opp og ikke trenger å huke seg, noe som hjelper ham med å unngå ryggsmerter. De gamle lastebilene hadde også for vane å gå i stykker i trafikken, la han til.
Brian Renfroe, president i National Letter Carriers Association, sa at fagforeningsmedlemmer er entusiastiske over de nye kjøretøyene, akkurat som de var da Grummans markerte et sprang fremover fra de tidligere kjøretøyene, jeeper av gammel klasse.
Han krediterte DeJoy for å bringe en følelse av at det haster med å få dem i produksjon.
«Vi er glade nå for å være på det punktet hvor de begynner å komme ut i gatene,» sa Renfroe.
Prosessen fikk en vanskelig start.
Miljøvernere ble rasende da DeJoy kunngjorde at 90% av neste generasjons kjøretøy i første rekkefølge ville være gassdrevne.
Det ble anlagt søksmål med krav om at postvesenet skulle elektrifisere sin flåte på mer enn 200 000 kjøretøy ytterligere for å redusere utslippene fra enderøret.
«Alle ble gale,» sa DeJoy.
Problemet, sa Dejoy, var ikke at han ikke ville ha elektriske kjøretøy. Snarere gjorde utgiftene til kjøretøyene, sammen med kostnadene ved å installere tusenvis av ladestasjoner og oppgradering av elektrisk service, dem uoverkommelige i en tid da byrået rapporterte store driftsunderskudd hvert kvartal.
Han fant en måte å øke antallet elektriske kjøretøy ytterligere da han møtte president Joe Bidens øverste miljørådgiver, John Podesta.
Det førte til en avtale der regjeringen ga 3 milliarder dollar til postvesenet, med deler av det øremerket elektriske ladestasjoner.
I desember 2022 kunngjorde DeJoy at postvesenet kjøpte 106 000 kjøretøy gjennom 2028. Det inkluderte 60 000 neste generasjons kjøretøy, 45 000 av dem elektriske modeller, sammen med 21 000 andre elektriske kjøretøy. Han lovet å gå helelektrisk for nye kjøp fra og med 2026.
«Med klimakrisen på dørstokken vår, vil elektrifisering av den amerikanske regjeringens største flåte gi fremgangen vi har ventet på,» sa Katherine García fra Sierra Club, som saksøkte postvesenet før avgjørelsen om å øke volumet av elektriske kjøretøy. kjøp.
Mellom de elektriske kjøretøyene, reduserte utløpsutslipp fra optimaliserte postruter og andre endringer, forventer byrået å kutte karbonutslippene med 40 % innen 2030, sa DeJoy. Ruterevideringene vil også spare penger.
Denne sommeren gikk postvesenets miljøkamper i full sirkel da Det hvite hus hedret den med en Presidential Federal Sustainability Award, som markerte slutten på «en interessant reise,» sa DeJoy.
Æren er et signal om byråets evne til å jobbe gjennom komplekse problemer, enten de er operasjonelle, økonomiske, tekniske, politiske eller av offentlig-politisk karakter, sa han.
