Instagram- og Facebook-brukere har forsøkt å stoppe bruken av dataene deres for å trene Meta AI, ved å bruke appene for sosiale medier for å legge ut en melding i protest – selv om det hele kan være for intet.
«Goodbye Meta AI»-erklæringen delt av over 600 000 mennesker – inkludert kjendiser som Julianne Moore, Tom Brady og Ashley Tisdale – beskytter faktisk ikke brukernes data fra å bli brukt til å trene teknologigigantens AI-programvare.
«Vær oppmerksom på at en advokat har rådet oss til å sette dette på, unnlatelse av å gjøre det kan føre til juridiske konsekvenser,» heter det i meldingen.
«Ettersom Meta nå er en offentlig enhet, må alle medlemmer legge ut en lignende uttalelse. Hvis du ikke legger ut innlegg minst én gang, vil det antas at det er greit at de bruker informasjonen og bildene dine,» fortsetter uttalelsen. «Jeg gir ikke Meta eller noen andre tillatelse til å bruke noen av mine personlige data, profilinformasjon eller bilder.»
Men tekstblokken forbyr faktisk ikke Meta å skrape brukernes offentlig tilgjengelige innhold for trening – det er bare en viral hoax.
«Å dele denne historien teller ikke som en gyldig form for innvending,» sa en Meta-talsperson til BBC.
Innleggene – en type masserepostert innhold kalt «copypasta» – har til og med blitt merket som «falsk informasjon» på nettet av Metas tredjeparts faktasjekker Lead Stories.
Meta lanserte sine generative AI-funksjoner for et år siden, og forsikret brukerne i en pressemelding om at de eneste «offentlig delte innleggene» på plattformene ble brukt til å trene systemet.
«Vi trente ikke disse modellene ved å bruke folks private innlegg,» skrev selskapet. «Vi bruker heller ikke innholdet i dine private meldinger med venner og familie for å trene våre AI-er.»
Drag queen og tidligere «American Idol»-deltaker Ava Vox tok til Facebook tidligere denne måneden for å advare brukere om at «Meta har full tillatelse» til å bruke data gjennom avtalte vilkår og betingelser – og at en videredelt tekstblokk ikke vil gjøre noe for å beskytte personvernet .
«Alle, vennligst SLUTT å poste den ‘farvel meta AI’ BS,» skrev Vox.
«Hackere bruker slike innlegg for å målrette mot godtroende og sårbare mennesker for å finne de enkleste profilene å komme inn på,» fortsatte hun.
«Vennligst slutt å være så naiv, og bli mer bevisst på internettsikkerhet og sikkerhet. Du legger bare et mål på ryggen for hackere ved å dele og lage de latterlige innleggene.»
Opplæring i kunstig intelligens har skapt bekymring for personvern, og mens folk i Europa kan velge bort Meta AI på grunn av regionale lover, gis ikke brukere i USA den samme beskyttelsen. I stedet er det beste de kan gjøre å sette profilene deres til private.
«Selv om vi for øyeblikket ikke har en opt-out-funksjon [for U.S. users]har vi bygget plattformverktøy som lar folk slette sin personlige informasjon fra chatter med Meta AI på tvers av appene våre,” sa en Meta-representant til Wired.
