Investor og strateg David Roche forventer at økonomien vil gå inn i et bjørnemarked i 2025, sa han mandag.
Markedet vil bli drevet ned av rentekutt som vil skuffe, en avtagende økonomi og en AI-boble, sa han under et CNBC-intervju.
Roche spådde at Fed ikke vil redusere rentene til markedets ønskede 3,50 %.
Feds medianprognose for 2025 er 4,1 %, ifølge CME FedWatch Tool.
Nesten alle markedsdeltakere forventet priser under 4,1 % innen september 2025, sa dataene.
Veteraninvestoren sa «den andre tingen er at fortjeneste [won’t] oppfylle forventningene, fordi økonomien kommer til å avta.»
Investorer står overfor et sverd med to ende, siden økonomien må bremses for å rettferdiggjøre rentekutt, forklarte Roche.
Den voksende AI-sektoren, som Roche sa har «besluttsomt kommet inn i bobleterreng» – som minner om dot-com-boblen som nådde toppen på begynnelsen av 2000-tallet, som samler seg på de økonomiske ukjente.
«Jeg tror det er nok i disse tre faktorene til å forårsake et bjørnemarked på minus 20% i 2025, kanskje fra slutten av dette året,» sa Roche.
Han sa at Fed ikke vil kutte renten med 50 basispunkter.
«Det er ikke behov for 50,» sa han. «Økonomien er fortsatt for motstandsdyktig.»
Strategen sa at han tror at Fed vil gi kutt på 25 basispunkter, selv om han advarte om at grepet vil redusere fortjenestemarginene i 2025.
«Hvis du vil at Fed skal redusere rentene, må økonomien bremse ned interessen, arbeidsmarkedene må slakke av, og marginene vil komme under press,» sa han.
Selv om han advarte om et bjørnemarked, sa Roche at Fed kan justere for å håndtere nedgangen.
«Sannsynligheten er [that] Fed har god plass til å kutte renten hvis ting går verre enn forventet, og det har gjentatte ganger sagt det, sa han.
Selv om det ikke er noen garanti for at Fed fullstendig kan starte et bjørnemarked, sa Roche at det vil være i stand til å stoppe det fra å bli «drakonisk» eller noe som vil «undergrave og ødelegge verdensøkonomien.»
Selvfølgelig utgjør politiske hendelser en annen stor risiko for økonomisk vekst, sa Roche.
Hans teori om et forestående bjørnemarked tar ikke hensyn til resultatene av presidentvalget i 2024, som kan ha stor innvirkning på markedet.
Ta for eksempel kryptorelaterte aksjer, som har svingt frem og tilbake de siste ukene siden investorene krysser fingrene for at tidligere president Donald Trump blir gjenvalgt og slapp på bransjereguleringene.
Bitcoin-aksjer steg i været etter at Trump ble skutt i et attentat, siden oddsen hans for å vinne valget steg.
Kryptoaksjen falt uken etter at president Joe Biden falt ut av løpet og visepresident Kamala Harris kunngjorde hennes intensjon om å stille, siden oddsen for en Trump-seier vaklet.
I mellomtiden førte Feds beslutning om å holde renten uendret investorene til panikk forrige uke og førte til et salg som rystet markedet.
Salget ble forverret av Bank of Japans beslutning om å øke landets lånekostnader, noe som tvang mange globale investorer til å angre sine strategiske carry trades.
Det globale salget, i tillegg til en svakere enn ventet amerikansk jobbrapport, trampet ned investorenes håp om en myk landing.
Men markedet gjorde en snuoperasjon, med S&P 500 ned mindre enn 0,1 % på slutten av forrige uke.
