Aaron Boone er ikke bekymret for Austin Wells.
Ja, Yankees-fangeren er midt i en lavkonjunktur.
Ja, dette er de fleste kampene han har spilt på en enkelt sesong.
Men lagets manager tror han kommer rett før start på ettersesongen.
«Han har gått glipp av noen plasser, som går sammen med flo og fjære av en sesong med å være en slager,» sa Boone onsdag, før Yankees falt for Orioles, 9-7, i The Bronx. «Du feiler noen baner som kanskje du vanligvis kjører. Men ingenting overdrevent bekymrende.»
Det har vært en vanskelig september for Wells, som har en skrålinje på .123/.194/.215 med .409 OPS etter å ha gått 0-for-4 på onsdag.
Han har åtte treff hele måneden og er 3-for-siste-38 med 11 strikeouts.
Boone tror ikke Wells’ store arbeidsmengde er en faktor i kampene hans.
Han har fått fridager.
Likevel har han dukket opp i 112 kamper, det meste i sin profesjonelle karriere.
«Jeg tror ikke det. Jeg føler meg ganske bra,» sa Wells da han ble spurt om den nevnte arbeidsmengden. «Det er bare baseball. Bare opp og nedturer. Ballene vil falle når de trenger det, forhåpentligvis. … jeg føler meg bra. Føler at jeg ser ballen ganske godt. Det er bare et spørsmål om å svinge på de riktige banene og ikke prøve å gjøre for mye.»
Det har totalt sett vært en fantastisk sesong for nybegynnerfangeren, som var en Rookie of the Year-kandidat frem til dette nylige lysbildet.
Han har gitt Yankees et kraftballtre midt i oppstillingen for å beskytte Aaron Judge og har prestert bedre defensivt enn forventet.
Nå håper Yankees at den 25 år gamle bakstopperen kan sprette tilbake og igjen bli en forskjell i oktober.
Hvis de tar divisjonen snart, kan Wells få enda mer pust i bakken, siden neste viktige kamp ikke ville være før ALDS-åpningen 5. oktober.
«Vi vil holde ham i gang regelmessig. Kanskje mer tilbøyelig til å få en ekstra dag eller noe,» sa Boone. «Men hvis vi klarer å clinch, får vi flere dager [to rest]. Jeg er ikke så bekymret for det. Fysisk tror jeg han er på et ganske bra sted.»
