DETROIT — Aaron Boones 12 år gamle Little League-lag i Sør-California kom aldri i nærheten av å nå Williamsport, men han kom til slutt dit som ESPN-kringkaster.
Så Yankees-manageren har en ide om hva spillerne hans går for på søndag – så lenge været ikke står i veien – når Yankees skal besøke Little League World Series-komplekset før de spiller mot Tigers in the Little League Classic på Bowman Field.
«Å holde på for første gang var fantastisk,» sa Boone lørdag før et 4-0-tap for Tigers på Comerica Park. «Alt jeg forestilte meg og drømte om og kanskje mer. Å få gjøre det gjennom årene og se store ligalag komme inn, det er en fin opplevelse. Jeg vet at gutta våre vil elske det.
«Gleder meg til det [Sunday]til å ankomme, komme til å gni skuldre med noen av Little League World Series-spillerne og henge med dem – åpenbart vet du hvor glade de vil være for å møte noen av gutta våre. Det er en kul dag og noe vi er heldige som får gjøre.»
Så lenge været samarbeider, selvfølgelig.
Varselet i Williamsport tilsier stormer på søndag, men i det minste fra lørdag ettermiddag planla Yankees å fly dit søndag morgen for å blande seg med Little League-spillere og deretter prøve å få kampen inn.
Hvis det blir utsatt, kan lagene fly tilbake til Detroit søndag kveld og spille seriefinalen på Comerica Park på mandag.
Et slikt scenario ville vært en hodepine fra et reiseperspektiv for Yankees, men Boone var overbevist om at spillerne hans ville like å spille med i Little League World Series.
«Jeg vet bare fra min erfaring og å vite hva vi går inn i at de vil elske det,» sa Boone. «Jeg har snakket med [Aaron Judge] litt om det, jeg vet at han ser frem til det. Disse barna kommer til å være i ærefrykt for noen av gutta våre, spesielt Aaron og Juan [Soto] og Giancarlo [Stanton] og Gerrit [Cole]. Men de vil gå begeistret over opplevelsen.»
