Kenneth Turcott har sett mer enn noen få spillere komme seg fra The Bronx til Hall of Fame i Cooperstown med egne øyne under åtte pluss tiår med Yankees-fandom.
Fra Joe DiMaggio til Derek Jeter, han har sett dem alle.
I disse dager, i en alder av 91, trenger han ikke gå langt for å nyte sin egen Yankees hall of fame, en han dyrker i hjemmet sitt i Pompton Plains, NJ, ved hjelp av New York Posts Yankee Poster Series sponset av Montefiore Einstein.
Hver torsdag fjerner Turcott, en Post-abonnent, kunstverket fra midten av avisen.
Godt hjulpet av døtrene Mary Sottile og Margaret Ohnikian og tre av hans barnebarn, har han satt sammen en utstilling som nå inkluderer 19 plakater, 13 Yankees-capser, et banner og en jersey.
«Alt ved dem er veldig fint og veldig interessant,» sa Turcott om plakatene, som inneholder stjerner som Aaron Judge, Juan Soto og Gerrit Cole, samt tre-homer-rookie-sensasjonen Ben Rice og pickupen Jazz Chisholm Jr. Det er også en hyllest til David Cones perfekte spill fra 1999. «De er definitivt samleobjekter. Jeg har fått mye glede av dem.»
Yankees har vært nær sentrum av Turcotts univers siden han var et barn som vokste opp i Milford, Conn.
Hver sommer frem til begynnelsen av videregående besøkte han tanten sin i Great Neck, NY, som hadde boksseter ved siden av Yankees-stuen.
Han rasler selvsikkert navnene på barndomsfavorittene hans – Joe D., Charlie Keller, Tommy Henrich, Bill Dickey.
«Alle de flinke gutta,» sier han. «De var veldig dyktige til å vinne.»
Turcott ble uteksaminert i 1954 fra Franklin og Marshall College, hvor han deltok i ROTC-programmet.
Det førte ham til en 12-årig karriere i luftforsvaret, og flyr C-135 transportfly.
Dette ble fulgt av 26 år som pilot for American Airlines.
Hele tiden utviklet Turcott og hans kone gjennom 66 år, Carol, som døde i 2022, en egen Yankee-fanhær.
Paret hadde åtte barn – seks jenter, to gutter … alle nålestriper.
Det er 23 barnebarn og 14 oldebarn, som nesten alle har bevart troen.
«En av døtrene mine [Margaret] klarte å gifte seg med en Mets-fan og han hjernevasker de tre guttene sine,” sa Turcott om Andrew, Justin og Connor Ohnikian. «Et par av dem har gått på Yankee-spill med Yankee-[fan] venner, og jeg tror vi kan få dem tilbake i kø litt etter litt.»
Turcott sier at rivaliseringen med barnebarnene hans aldri blir opphetet og akkurat nok til å holde ting morsomt.
«Vi driver ikke med for mye razzing, men [Andrew] vil ringe meg opp og fortelle meg hva poengsummen er når Yankees taper, og jeg går tilbake til ham og forteller ham hvor mange kamper Mets er ute av førsteplassen, sa Turcott.
«Vi krangler om Mets og Yankees nesten hver dag. Vi snakker alltid om baseball,» sa Andrew, 21. «Det er veldig kult å høre ham fortelle historier om de gamle Yankees, til og med de gamle Mets. Hver gang en gammel spiller [is mentioned on the broadcast]han vil alltid ha en historie om ham.»
